Cabaret shines fluoro light on queer issues
THE ROCHDALE Theatre in Goonellabah, used to hosting urbane ensemble productions, is about to get a 21st century wake-up call from the innocuous-sounding Our Regional Centre.
A queer electro-cabaret, it's the brainchild of the fluoro-duo Shiny Shiny. Melania Jack of Shiny Shiny said she and her partner Patty were touring overseas last year and, missing Lismore, wrote a multi-media extravaganza about its vibrant queer community.
"A few episodes sparked our ideas - the gay-hate truck of Christian Democrat Peter Madden and the extremist insinuations (of Liberal senator Cory Bernardi) over the marriage equality debate.
We saw this as a chance to combat them with positive energy."
The cabaret also stars DJ Lady K, Combat Cabaret, Kannibal Kitty, Holly Zwals and Space Tapes Analogalicious narrating a virtual tour through iconic Lismore destinations.
Our Regional Centre plays this Saturday, November 3, at 7.30pm and Sunday, November 4, at 1.30pm. Tickets from www.greentix.com.au for $22 or $20 at the door.
