HIGH-profile Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng has arrived in the United States after being flown out of Beijing with his immediate family.

The blind activist, who came to prominence exposing forced abortions in the Chinese countryside, touched down at Newark airport in New Jersey shortly after 6:00pm Saturday (8:00am Sunday AEST).

He spoke to reporters outside a New York University housing, saying he was grateful that the Chinese government had been dealing with his situation with "restraint and calm".

"I hope to see that they continue to open discourse and earn the respect and trust of the people," Mr Chen said, speaking through a translator in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighbourhood.

He will be studying as a fellow at NYU's School of Law.
