FLAMBOYANT home loans specialist "Aussie John" Symond has been honoured with the Australian Father of the Year Award.
Known as the face of Aussie Home Loans, Mr Symond is rarely recognised for his behind-the-scenes work with charity organisations throughout the country.
In 2002 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australian for his involvement with Jeans for Genes, the Sydney Children's Hospital and Friends of St Vincent's Private.
Most recently the father of two has dedicated his time and energy to The Shepherd Centre, a charity for deaf and hearing-impaired children.
At a ceremony at NSW Parliament House on Tuesday, The Shepherd Centre CEO Jim Hungerford described Mr Symond as "a wonderful role model and inspirational father".
Mr Symond attributed his success and sense of goodwill to his Lebanese parents who made lives for themselves in Australia as green grocers and worked hard to fund their son's education.
"My parents demonstrated the importance of prioritising their children. I'm fortunate that this was instilled in me," Mr Symond said
"I am honoured to be recognised in this way. It's a complete surprise."
