To buy a church, you should first buy some art.
Art and church lovers are called to an Art Fiesta in Federal this weekend (May 26-27) to help the local community raise enough money to buy the local Anglican Church.
The church was closed down by church authorities and will be sold to help fund a shortfall in diocesan finances, unless the community can raise $200,000 to purchase the church and grounds. The community has been fundraising but still needs another $100,000 and it's hoped that this weekend's two-day art auction will bring collectors and enthusiasts out of the woodwork and into the heart of Federal.
This Saturday, Club Fiesta offers an evening of cocktails, canapés, music and dancing at the Federal Hall as well as an auction of works by local artists such as Emma Walker, John Dahlsen and Mike King-Prime. Reserve prices on the works are low and people will have an opportunity to bid reasonable prices for some highly collectable and eye-catching works. Works range in retail value from $2000 - $15,000.
The event starts at 7pm and the event costs $60 and tickets are available at the Lismore Star Court Theatre Shop, online at www.starcourttheatre.com.au or by phoning 6622 5005.
On both Saturday and Sunday, a silent art auction will take place in the church and SMS bidding will be offered to registered bidders. This auction opens at 7pm on Saturday and will close at 3.30pm on Sunday. Retail values of works range from $100 - $3000 and the artworks from both auctions can be viewed at www.federalhall.org.au.
Sunday, May 27, from 11am to 4pm, will be Fiesta Fun Day and everyone is invited to come along and enjoy music and loads of kids' activities as well as raffles and food, with all profits going to the cause.
